‘One Connect’ is a community programme initiated by the Neighbourhood Committees (NC) to better reach out and engage private estate residents through a wide range of community bonding activities, as well as to better connect private estate residents to various Government agencies on local maintenance issues. This community initiative is part of the People’s Association (PA)’s overall plan to enable and empower NCs to better serve the needs of their private estate residents in view of a growing population of private estate residents in Singapore. Ang Mo Kio GRC first piloted a One Connect Programme in July 2009 with a simple one-stop hotline service aimed at improving the coordination of cleanliness and maintenance services in their private estates. The 2-year pilot programme has proven to be a useful interface to assist private estate residents in their dealings with Government agencies, especially on issues involving more than one agency. In view of the usefulness of a one-stop hotline, the PA has further enhanced the programme by incorporating a social bonding element so as to encourage residents to know their neighbours better and to be more involved and connected to the community. The newly enhanced ‘One Connect’ programme will include the formation of Taskforce in each GRC involving representatives from the private estates to work closely with the NCs, government agencies and local agencies such as Condominium Management Corporation Strata Title (MCST) to utilise all channels to reach out to residents from all ages, races and estates.
